The list below is a small sample of ESL organizations in and around Atlanta, as well as some online resources that students might find useful in learning about topics like grammar, mechanics, writing conventions, etc. It is not meant to be an exhaustive list, but we will inevitably add to it when we hear of other available resources or organizations. Most of the resources below take the aforementioned “traditional” approach to non-native speakers, in that they tend to focus on the instruction of “standard” American English language and culture, native accent reduction, etc.
You will note that many of these organizations are for-profit or fee-based organizations, and that many of the nonprofit offerings have religious affiliations. These points are all worth noting, as this list, though limited, may help to illustrate the dominant attitudes towards World Englishes in the Atlanta community at large. They are not affiliated with or endorsed by either the Writing and Communication Program or Georgia Tech; we merely offer these links as a courtesy for interested students making their first forays into literacy in English.
